Class III+ Devil's Kitchen in Goshen Pass at 3 ft.
Private Boaters
We can't give out river levels and trip descriptions over the telephone because of the volume of calls such a service would generate. We always direct private boaters to our website for this information. We can't make recommendations beyond what is on our website because we don't really have the time to interview private boaters to determine what is suitable for their skill level. We also have no control over what they eventually opt to run and how well equipped they are for that run. We do not want to make decisions about what is appropriate for people we don't know, won't meet, and will not be in a position to screen! Additionally, most of the property on the rivers is private. The arrangements that we have with landowners can not be extended by us to non-customers. Note that any island big enough to have suitable camping is deeded to someone and is also private property. When planning your trip to our area, be sure to get the permission of landowners for access and camping. We have! You should also know that crossing railroad property to access the river is a class IV misdemeanor with a minimum fine of $250.00!We don't! We do not monitor the clarity of the water and don't even know of a scale for doing so.
Since our vehicles are not licensed or insured "For Hire", we can not haul private boaters. Our facilities and space are very limited here, and most of the time we can't accommodate people who are just looking for advice. We welcome your visits and will assist when we can, but obviously weekends and holidays are pretty frenetic around here just seeing that our customers are tended to!
Anyone is welcome to download our trip maps from our website for free provided they are being used by private boaters and for non-commercial use. If you are unable to do so, or the quality is not good enough, you may purchase the maps from us for $0.75 each. There are four of the James - Trips A and B, Trips C and D, Trip E, and Trip F - and three of the Maury - Trip G, Trip H, and Trip I. These maps point out both public access and camping and note sites that we use with permission. It is up to you to gain permission on your own. (We don't want to be responsible for sending a crowd of people to someone's door!) Please be sure to make clear which maps you are ordering and don't send cash! Please include a self addressed, stamped envelope (about $0.37 for every three maps). Of course, the maps are also available here at our store.
We maintain a free mail list for people interested in the whitewater runs in the area, most notably Goshen Pass on the Maury, and e-mail to that list whenever such a whitewater run is up. If you'd like to be added to this list, please e-mail us with your full name and e-mail address and the type of boat you paddle (OC-1, OC-2, C-1, C-2, K-1, etc.) in the body of your letter. Please note that this mailing has a large address header (over 200 names) and some servers will not take mail with that many, so you will have to continue to visit our website for the latest levels.
