Trip maps are not to take the place of careful boating and scouting. Stream structures and hazards vary at different river levels and can even change completely after one high water event.
2004 RATES
All prices include instruction, one detailed trip map, and shuttle to and from the trip of your choice. A 5% discount is offered for cash payments. Kayak rental includes one paddle and one life jacket for one person. Canoe rental includes two paddles and two life jackets for two people. A third person or dog is $31.60 extra. Under no circumstance will four people be put in one canoe. Rates cover rental of all gear for the entire day. Times listed are based on paddling at a steady pace and are given only for your convenience in planning your trip. You may take more time or less. Shuttles to and from the river and mandatory orientation add about one and a half hours.
Classifying of rapids was made on the American Whitewater Affiliation Scale of River Difficulty (Class I-VI, Class III being the limit for open canoes) with river levels at 1 1/2 feet above the lowest level at which the water is canoeable. (Click here to go to the bottom of the "Information" page for an explanation of the A.W.A. Scale of River Difficulty.) These conditions vary as the rivers rise and fall. Early spring rivers run full and cold and require extra skill and precaution and, as a rule, should be canoed only by adults in good physical condition, traveling no more than two in a canoe, and in groups of at least three canoes. After May, the Maury and the James usually run under one foot over zero with water temperatures over seventy degrees until October.
Any and all trips or portions of trips may be suspended without notice because of unsafe conditions. Due to the length of shuttle, unscheduled trips to the James will not be made with fewer than three canoes when the Maury is running above zero.
Rates subject to change without notice. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone we judge unsuited for the trip.

Canoe fees are for one boat for one or two people; kayak fees, one boat, one person. 5% off for cash or check payments.
